Rae Eriksson has lived in Xewkija for seven years. She’s an ‘off the cuff’ writer, and has had the gift of sponteneity since childhood. ‘Throw a subject at me and I start hearing it in rhyme.’ she says. With a solid five piece horn line floating around in her head, she is a lover of the Blues, R&B, and in awe of some of the talent, this little island boasts. She has been involved in music for years, playing and listening to bands and recalls a fond memory, meeting Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock 1969. At the age of 71, her story is a colourful one. Her performance will be wonderful.
Gozo born Rosita has lived and breathed art since she was young. A seventies child, she honed her art right here on the island training with well-known Gozitan artists, such as Paul Stellini. Her passion for art was fuelled through a variety of techniques. Her work has great depth, she explores varying textures and rich colour schemes. We look forward to hearing more about her work this month.
Guernsey-based guitarist, vocalist and didgeridoo-champion, Mike Meinke, began his musical journey in a time of no internet when people did physical things. He learnt guitar from an old Red Hot Chilli Peppers cassette tape. Play, stop, figure the note out and repeat. Inventive fingerstyle, percussive guitar akin to influences such as John Butler, Fink and Nitin Sawhney, and distinctive smokey vocals thread his multi-genre music together. As a lover of all music, Mike prefers to think of music without boundaries rather than be restricted to one scene – folk, rock, reggae and blues being the primary cornerstones of his creations.
Sam played in a plethora of bands before deciding to go it alone. Drawing inspiration from 60s style folk songs , Nick Drake, Elliot-Smith and Bob Dylan his voice is deep, daring and devastatingly distinctive. His first album ‘Meet Me At Spoons’ was released in 2018 and produced by Chris Vella and since he has continued to release tracks that adopt a current message. He writes authentically about real issues and delivers his music with sublime honesty. It’s the kind of talent that is only going to get better with age.
Powerhouse Gozitan singer, songwriter, Jolene Samhan is no stranger to a stage. She has performed in musicals across the Maltese Islands and has also fronted DCapitals Big Band. Born and raised in Nadur with Brazilian, Palestinian and a German-Polish background, which flows through her inspiration. She started writing her own music during the pandemic. We can’t wait to hear how her talent has grown. Look out for the first track she ever wrote…’February 1st’ – you can also download it from the link below.
