Here’s who’s playing Backdoor Jam this November.
Backdoor Jam November: Mark Xuereb, dixie strings, fuzzhoneys, pyramid suns, the busker
Backdoor Jam is nearly at an end! Our online mini gig series started in December 2020 with an aim to offer a stage to the out-of-work musicians on the island during the pandemic. Since then we have showcased over 40+ local musicians and artists from across Gozo and Malta.
You can watch the series on our YouTube channel and see our last shows over the next few weeks there too!
It’s the last month on Backdoor Jam! We’ve brought you a whole year of exceptional music from awesome bands across Gozo and Malta.
mark Xuereb is a life-depicting Gozitan artist. There is no set medium or style. Instead, he likes to allow space for the idea to dictate how best to express itself. This multi-faceted approach together with his willingness to experiment with non-traditional techniques ensures that his work is never stagnant and always on point.
Dixie Strings are a Gypsy Swing and Blue Grass style string trio, consisting of two guitars and an upright bass. They play a range of Jazz standards, Rockabilly and Blues inspired music and will most certainly get your feet tapping.
Brought together by their mutual love of classic glam and rock’n’roll, The Glades are 2 men on a mission to get your booties shaking! Engulfed by the mutual interest stamped as 70s rock’n’roll, ‘The Glades’ started out with the name ‘Pebble Beach’, providing an extravaganza of duality, nowadays, these guys not only look the part, they sound the part too.
Pyramid Suns are a progressive, psychedelic, alternative rock band that packs a serious punch live on stage. The band’s music is immediately identifiable by Joel’s lively vocals and aggressive guitar playing. Kyle plays bluesy lead guitar that smoothens out the tension and provides a psychedelic atmosphere to the music. Keith plays solid rhythm to the band’s more hard-rocking songs equally well as he stretches out and plays prominent, progressive rock-influenced bass lines. Michael’s drumming is punchy and aggressive but also detailed, solidifying the band’s unique sound.
The Busker is a local nu-funk/neo-soul-pop band. They have released two albums to date, one of which managed to snag the win for the Lovin’ Malta Best album of the year. They have also released 3 EPs, the most recent one titled ‘X’, which was released this year, spawning two number 1 singles in the local PRS Chart. Throughout the years, the band has managed to headline major events, and perform gigs internationally in the UK & Italy. With a recent change in line-up, the band is focused on writing their follow-up material to mark a new chapter in their career.

When you mix the piano-accordion, keys, saxophone, aerophone, mandolin, violin, electric and bass guitars, Malta’s traditional flejguta and żafżafa instruments along with percussion and vocals, you have Kantera. With their lyrics built around social issues, this Maltese ensemble creates subliminal music of the past that has as much reason to be here, in the present.
Backdoor Jam was proudly brought to you by the Cultural Heritage Directorate within the Ministry for Gozo.
