As part of our GITHGreen series, Zen D’Amato Gautam explores easy eco-friendly packed lunch ideas.
Starting to make the change to an eco-friendly lifestyle takes just a moment of mindfulness in choosing the right options. We all want convenience, but it is time to look at the bigger picture and realize that we have to change our ways and acknowledge the fact that each of us is responsible for the damage we are doing to the planet with the mass, particularly with the mass consumption of plastic.
Read our eco-friendly packed lunch ideas.
In view of the starting of another scholastic year, we’d like to share with you some ideas to make packing an eco-friendly school lunch bag.
1. Beeswax food wraps
There are many small actions that we can do on a daily basis that will have a big impact on the planet’s sustainability. Instead of plastic wrap, cling film, or foil – all of which are single-use and non-recyclable, think about using a reusable beeswax food wrap that shapes itself around the food product. use it for bread, fruit, baked goods, and basically anything that you need to protect and keep fresh. They also come in cute prints, for both kids and adults and can last up to 12 months.
2. Metal lunchboxes
Stainless steel lunch boxes are durable, last forever, and do not leach any chemicals. They are leak-proof, air-tight, and can go in the dishwasher and microwave. The best thing about them is the compartments. Some have up to 5 different compartments, perfect for kids who like variety in their lunch. You can combine sandwiches, fruit, and snacks in the same container.
3. Insulated food jars
They are like small thermoses, compact, light-weight, PBA free and keep food warm or cold for 5-7 hours. You can find insulated food jars with your child’s favourite cartoon character or other cool designs.
4. Bamboo cutlery
Re-use your cutlery and save waste! Bamboo is one of the most sustainable organic materials. This fast-growing grass requires no fertilizer, and self-regenerates from its own roots, without the need of being re-planted. Moreover, bamboo cutleries are safe for kids and can be easily washed and reused.
5. Stainless Steel Water Bottles
Most of that which is good for the planet is also good for the body. The chemicals of plastic seep through water bottles quickly, therefore we have to discard and replace plastic bottles frequently, generating a lot of useless trash that will take hundreds of years to decompose. Stainless steel bottles do not have any BPA and can serve a lifetime.
6. Reusable Straws
These soft and colourful reusable silicone straws are the most popular with young kids. Come with a cleaning brush
7. Fresh is best
Try and resist the temptation to buy pre-packed and processed foods. Snacks like Muesli bars, cheese sticks, biscuits, and so on are generally always wrapped in plastic. Switch to fresh fruit and homemade cookies. Seasonal fruits and vegetables taste better, so take a note to check what’s fresh in season, ideally locally-grown and organic. You would not only stop contributing to waste pollution but you are also giving your children healthier options.
8. Meatless Mondays
If you are not already following a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle, have you considered cutting all meat and fish once a week? ‘Meatless Monday’ is a campaign aimed at swapping to a healthy diet, alongside promoting a cruelty-free choice and a cleaner planet.
There are many positive outcomes that you would be contributing to just by not sending plastics and excess packaging to school with your child every day. You are reducing waste going to landfills, you are sending an indirect message to manufacturers who use plastic by choosing not to buy from them, and you are protecting marine life and the entire ecosystem of our planet. The best way to instill the concept of sustainability in our children is by giving a good example and their school lunch packaging is the perfect occasion to do so.
