Are you ready to tick off this list of ‘off-the-beaten’ hike spots in Gozo?

Check out these 5 brilliant hikes on Gozo Island. Whether you have your family in tow or are heading off for a solo trek, here is some fabulous inspiration and cool things to look out for along the way from Off D Island Adventures.

Distance: 2km
Time: 45mins
Map: Xlendi Tower

Starting off from Xlendi Bay, you can walk along the bay, leading you to the tower. The initial half is a paved path along the Xlendi bay, and once you reach the small bridge, it becomes a foot trail. You can admire the tower, which was built in 1650 by the Order of St. John and funded by the Università of Gozo. Visiting at dusk is recommended!

Distance and Time: Variable according to your liking.
Map: Wied mgarr ix-Xini

Did you know that this valley offers a pleasant walk surrounded by thick vegetation that you will probably not find anywhere else in Gozo? You start off from the bay itself and you just walk along the foot trail found in the valley. What’s good about it is that when you feel you’ve covered enough distance, you can simply turn around. Check out the below blog for more info on this great hike.

Distance: 3km
Time: 50 mins
Map: Ras in-Newwiela

This is another jaw-dropping spot in Gozo, which also has a very interesting link to the history of the Maltese islands. In Maltese, ‘Newwiela’ means “to hand over”. It was from this same point that the Ottomans lowered the Gozitan slaves they captured in the 1551 attack onto their ships. We suggest you start off from the road leading to il-Kantra, just past Ta’ Cenc hotel. You will be mesmerized with cliff edge views surrounding you.

Distance: 2.5km
Time: 1h 15mins
Map: Mushroom Rock

Most of you have probably heard about Wied il Mielah, but did you know that in just 45 minutes you can also see the so-called ‘Mushroom rock’? Why is it called so, you might ask? It’s simple – the natural erosion formed this rock very much like a mushroom. From Wied il-Mielah, head West along the coastline. Apart from the views, make sure you look where you’re stepping… the rock formation is full of fossils!

Distance: 4km
Time: 2 hours
Map: Punic Temple

This walk starts next to San Raflu lake and gets you to a point where you have a beautiful view of Dwejra from afar. Apart from that, you can admire the Punic temple which now looks more like a man-made cave. You can opt to do this hike either as a loop or a two-way walk.
