Ta Pinu

The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Ta’ Pinu is a Roman Catholic Minor Basilica and National Shrine located in the village of Gharb in Gozo.

This Basilica stands firm in the middle of fields of gold (in Summer) and green (in Spring – Winter). This awe-inspiring basilica is a must-visit on Gozo Island. Outside you will find ornate mosaics featuring the life of Christ. Inside is just as beautiful and features Christ on the crucifix in the middle of the church.

Opposite the Ta’ Pinu sanctuary is Ta’ Għammar Hill, a rather steep elevated pathway.  Along this winding pathway, you will encounter 14 marble statues that present scenes from the Stations of the Cross starting with the Last Supper of Jesus up to the crucifixion and burial. The white Carrara marble statues were placed along the path in the early 1980s and were sculpted at Pietra Santa, Italy, on the designs of Alfred Camilleri Cauchi.

Many pilgrims venture to the hilltop as an act of repentance. Nowadays it is one of the most visited sites in Gozo. It takes around 20 minutes to walk up the steep hill and then you are rewarded with stunning panoramic views of Gozo.
