Festivals In Gozo, Malta 2022
Carnival is part of Malta’s tradition. It’s a time when we the streets come alive and we adorn our disguise.
Carnival in Gozo is without a doubt, one of the most fun times to be on Gozo island. When the new year comes around there is a hive of activity throughout the towns as February comes closer. Local craftsmen will be locked away in their garages creating floats for the parades, families will be sorting out (or dusting off) costumes in anticipation of the big celebration.
Carnival celebrations are ingrained in Maltese folklore and have been celebrated since the Knights of St. John in 1530. It used to be exclusive to Valletta but Gozo has most definitely taken over the ‘place to be’ over the last decade.
Expect the streets to come alive with activities, music, street food and everybody people will be dressed up – even the dogs! Not too dissimilar to Carnival in Venice, the idea is that you wear a mask and are not recognised. Completely different to Carnival in Venice, the more gruesome the disguise the better!
One thing is for certain, you most definitely get to experience local humour when you experience Carnival in Gozo.
