A New Virtual Reality Experience Showcases the Island’s Cultural Soul
Gozo has always been a place you feel before you fully understand. Stone, silence, bells, sea. Now, for the first time, much of that atmosphere can be stepped into virtually.
On Friday 27 February 2026, the Wonders of Gozo virtual reality experience was officially launched at Gozo College Sir Arturo Mercieca Primary School in Victoria. The initiative forms part of the wider virtualmalta.com project and marks a significant step forward in the digital promotion of Gozo’s cultural and natural heritage.

A Project Born in Uncertain Times
The concept originated during the COVID-19 period, when travel paused and cultural spaces fell quiet. According to Anthony Chircop, President of the Eastern Regional Council, the project was developed as a response to restrictions on movement and in-person engagement.
What began as a solution to physical limitation has since evolved into something more strategic: a long-term digital cultural product designed to widen access to Malta and Gozo’s heritage.
In collaboration with the Gozo Regional Council and supported by the Malta Tourism Authority, the initiative demonstrates how regional bodies can work collectively to strengthen national identity and tourism through innovation.
President of the Gozo Regional Council, Samuel Azzopardi, described the project as an example of cross-regional collaboration without barriers. When it comes to heritage, he noted, there should be no borders.

Step Inside Gozo’s Landmarks
Through immersive virtual reality technology, Wonders of Gozo transports viewers into some of the island’s most iconic sites:
- The historic Cittadella in the heart of Victoria
- The revered Ta’ Pinu National Shrine
- The island’s two grand opera houses, Teatru Astra and Teatru Aurora
- Rural landscapes and cultural sites that reflect Gozo’s agricultural roots
The experience is designed to be immersive rather than informational alone. Viewers are not simply shown a monument. They are placed within it.

Why This Matters for Gozo
For an island that balances tradition with a growing appetite for innovation, this project signals a shift.
Virtual reality will not replace the experience of standing on the Cittadella’s bastions at sunset or hearing an aria fill one of Victoria’s opera houses. It does, however, extend access. It allows schools, international audiences, potential visitors, and cultural institutions to engage with Gozo’s heritage in a new way.
It also positions Gozo within the evolving global conversation around digital tourism and immersive storytelling. Cultural preservation now includes digital interpretation.
For Gozo, that matters.

A Launch Focused on Experience
The launch event included official addresses, a presentation of the project’s long-term vision, and live demonstrations, allowing attendees to experience the VR tours firsthand.
The message was clear: this is not simply a technological novelty. It is part of a broader strategy to strengthen Gozo’s cultural and tourism offering through innovation.
As the island continues to define its place between past and future, projects such as Wonders of Gozo suggest that heritage here is not static. It is being reinterpreted, expanded, and shared in new formats.
