Following the 11th Anniversary of its inception, which was celebrated last weekend, Il-Ħaġar Museum and Community Cultural Centre in Victoria’s Pjazza San Ġorġ continues with its rich programme of events. On Saturday 2nd March 2024 the Museum will be hosting a recital by Noel Beck (clarinet), Fiorella Camilleri (flute) and Anne Marie Podestà (harp). The trio will be performing works by Shostakovich, Saint-Saëns, Debussy, Faure, Bizet, and others. The Concert starts at 19:30 and, as is the Museum’s democratic policy, entrance is free. Seat reservations are recommended by sending an email to email@example.com. This recital forms part of the initiative Easter in Gozo organised by the Ministry for Gozo and Planning and is supported by the Cultural Heritage Directorate within the same Ministry. The audience can enjoy this evening of music while surrounded by the works of the current exhibition Unknown Prescription where paintings and photography by Maltese artists Mario Abela, Charles Balzan, and Justin Falzon “dialogue with artefacts” from Il-Ħaġar’s permanent collection. This exhibition remains open until Sunday 14th April 2024. How many of you are with us on loving a Sunday stroll through an Artisan Market? My fondest memories and favourite market to date is the one in Galway, Ireland. Way back in the late 90’s within the cobblestoned village of Galway was an Artisan Market that happened every weekend. They had everything you could think of. Stall holders were selling their homemade breads, pizzas, cheeses, imported salamis, dips, olives, wines, and conserves while a few others had handmade goods including knitted & crochet sweaters, blankets & bags. There were sculptors, painters and of course the coffee and dessert stalls that were the most highly populated.
As I trace back over the years to all my visits to these artisan markets I recall the fond memories of tasting the delicious savoury & baked goods, chatting to old and new friends & having a little shuffle to some live music while children were running around with their joyful giggles. It all brings warmness to my heart and a softness to my soul to revisit those memories. I find the whole experience intimate and rewarding both as an attendee of a market and also as a seller and now co-ordinator of Fresh Finds Mercato Gozo.
By attending Fresh Finds Mercato Gozo the following happens by default;
- Experience the opportunity to shop locally which is best for our planet.
- Enjoy face-to-face interaction with the maker & their story.
- Purchase items that are made with love, care and enthusiasm.
- Minimise packaging and support our environment.
- Support our local community & artisans.
- Hang out and chat to our friends & make new ones.
- Shop in our own time without pushy salespeople.
Fresh Finds Mercato Gozo The History
The idea for #FFMG began a couple of years ago during Covid time but regulations were complicated and so it got placed on the back seat. I then decided to test-run an artisan market with my nearest and dearest and it was a great success. We all had the experience of feeling rewarded, inspired and connected – what more could we ask for?
Gozo Island is brimming with artisans making some incredible products and we felt inspired to create Fresh Finds Mercato Gozo, a regular running market on Gozo along with my assistant Alicja Sosnia who has had experience running Artisan Markets and brings her fine detailed eye to it all.
Six months in the making, between scouting sites, sending emails, receiving permission, having permission withdrawn and then granted again. The Ministry of Gozo has been very supportive of Fresh Finds Mercato Gozo for which we are very grateful.
Long and behold patience has been practiced along with perseverance and we are ready to run our first edition of the Fresh Finds Gozo Mercato as a Christmas Market on Saturday December 9th and Sunday December 10th.
We sure do hope you can join with your families and friends at Fresh Finds Mercato Gozo to support our shopp local culture and to support our resident artisans. If anyone feels called to come sell their goods please do connect via email or on socials. We look forward to welcoming you.
