We all know how much of Italian culture has seeped across to our wonderful Gozo, with it being in such proximity, and one of the concepts we’re glad made it across the sea has to be aperitivo. Delicious drinks and superb snacks from 5pm onwards, it’s hard not to love the concept!
Picture this: you’re perched on the ninth floor of the Grand Hotel in Mgarr, Gozo’s harbour, surrounded by breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea, with the warm Maltese sun painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. What’s Happy Hour without cocktails? Fear not, because Level Nine has you covered. We tried out their signature cocktail, ’Grand Level 9’, with gin, Cointreau, elderflower liquor and rosemary. The herby tones alongside the sweetness made for a delicious cocktail, deserving of their signature name. The ‘Rakahanga’ with spiced rum, schnapps, pineapple juice and passion fruit, the fruity and fresh one that made us feel like we were drinking summer. And ‘Sweet Caroline’, full of basil, Bacardi and lemon soda; refreshing and sweet, yet light! When it’s two for one, how could you say no?
Not only do they have fabulously speciality cocktails, but you can get all your classic favourites too like Negronis, Mojitos, Long Island Ice Teas and mocktails. Whatever your mood, happy hour has something to satisfy your thirst.

Let’s talk about the star of the show: the food. Chef Oliver Glowig, renowned for his culinary expertise, has curated a menu that’s as delightful as the setting itself. If you want to truly embrace aperitivo culture, and get stuck into happy hour, the small bite offerings are perfect for sharing, and just as delicious as their main menu.
We started with some of their aged shaved Parmesan cheese, served with taralli, delicious savoury crackers. This delicious light bite is full of flavour, and watching the staff shave this awesome hunk of cheese in front of you whets the appetite in ways we could only imagine!
We sampled the deep-fried ravioli filled with local Gbejna sheep cheese. These had us drooling, and once we started, we couldn’t stop! Alongside this you can try their Cod Croquettes with Saffron Mayonnaise, Pastafrolla with Bean Cream and Bacon, Fava Bean Chips, and many more delicious bites that make the perfect accompaniment to their cocktails.
