Gozo Attractions. Take A Walk To Ta’ Ġurdan Lighthouse in Ghasri And Reap Epic Views Of Gozo Island.
Ta’ Ġurdan Lighthouse is one of Gozo’s landmarks is also known as Il-Fanal ta’ Ġurdan. It is an active lighthouse found on a hill that lies in the village of Għasri. If you love to walk, this is a fantastic hike that provides mesmerizing panoramic views across Gozo Island.
From here you can take the trail on foot or by bike to Ta Pinu, San Dimitri Chapel, Wied il Mielaħ and Wied il Ghasri. It’s also partly accessible by car. Please note, the elevation can be challenging for some.
The History
Ta’ Ġurdan Lighthouse in Ghasri is a working lighthouse and automatically flashes a bright white light every 7.5 seconds, which is visible for 20 nautical miles out to sea. It has a considerable focal height of 180m above sea level.
The building is also used as a weather monitoring station and serves as the principal Global Atmospheric Watch Station for the Central Mediterranean. The air quality instruments based there measure several parameters such as sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxide.
Walk It!
The walk starts and ends in Għarb village square. The road running down the left-hand side of the church leads to open countryside, passing the “St. Dimitri Chapel” and affording good views of the lighthouse and Ta Pinu.
Soon along the coast, you will reach the valley of “Wiedil-Mielaħ”. This walk leads on to the magnificent valley of “Wiedil-Għasri”, ensconced between sheer cliffs, followed by Ta’ Ġurdan Lighthouse.
Why not continue to Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary which leads you back to the centre of Gharb village. The round trip should take around 2.5 hours, walking at a brisk pace.
