With its’ twinkling fairy lights illuminating the beautiful seafront terrace this Gozo staple has been diligently sending out a warm message throughout the pandemic that they are still here and continuing to do what they do. The charming Ċensu Attard (or you may know him has Vincent) opened Smugglers Cave in 1970 and has never looked back. This year is extra special for the restaurant as they celebrate their 50th anniversary. That, definitely calls for a golden celebration don’t you think?
Smugglers Cave stands proudly at the water’s edge of Marsalforn Bay and is a firm favourite amongst locals and tourists alike. The restaurant is renowned for its’ friendly atmosphere and service with the warmest smile. Ċensu’s greatest passion is looking after his customers and many return time again from all over the world to see him. He believes in giving the best service and making every customer feel special, spreading joy with his naturally jovial nature.
Family is at the heart of the restaurant and Ċensu’s wife, Ġuża works relentlessly to help the business thrive. Ċensu’s daughter Ediana and her husband Joseph have continued to run the restaurant during the pandemic, quickly adapting to the times by transitioning to offer a takeaway and delivery service. They are a strong team, supporting and encouraging each other to drive their business forward. We love Ediana’s caring energy and took the opportunity to ask her to share some words of optimism with the community.
On the menu you will find something for everyone; international dishes, fresh seafood and traditional plates such as fried or stewed Maltese rabbit and Bragioli. However, for many, the star of the show is Ċensu’s homemade ravioli. Ċensu followed his dreams over thirty years ago and turned his hands to creating beautiful ravioli and cannelloni. Over the years he has expanded his repertoire and now creates salmon and local cheese ravioli and healthy, wholemeal pie dough. You can sample all these homemade delights at the restaurant or they can be purchased from many of our local supermarkets.
The GITH team enjoyed some of Smugglers Cave’s finest seafood and tucked in alfresco to recreate that ‘by the sea’ feeling as we were still on partial lockdown. Our meals were delivered true to form with a hearty smile. First up was stuffed calamari, filled to the brim with a mix of shrimps, mussels and anchovies, with a typical Mediterranean mix of the freshest onions, tomatoes, garlic, egg, cheese, black olives, capers and mint. Always a harmonious combination. We also sampled the local snapper fish served ‘Al Vino Bianco’. It was cooked to perfection, light and fresh, they even provided extra stock to lift and enhance the flavour. A fish supper wouldn’t be complete without a bottle of crisp white wine – thank you Smugglers Cave – and for the delicious homemade Tiramisu.
