If you’ve landed on Malta for a Mediterranean escape and haven’t yet ventured to her sleepy little sister across the water, consider this your sign. Gozo may only be 25 minutes away by ferry, but she feels a world apart — rugged, radiant, and rich in soul. Whether you’re a nature lover, a culture seeker, a food enthusiast or simply craving slower rhythms, Gozo can show you a good time, even in just one day.
Getting There
Your journey begins with a short, scenic ferry ride from Ċirkewwa on the northern tip of Malta. You can either hop on the Gozo Channel ferry (which carries both cars and passengers) or take the newer, faster Gozo Fast Ferry from Valletta. If you’ve got a car, great, Gozo is wonderfully driveable. If not, don’t worry because, taxis, eBikes and quad tours are all easily available.
Morning: Soak Up the Spirit of the Island
Start your day early with a visit to Ġgantija Temples, one of the oldest free-standing structures in the world. Older than the pyramids, these Neolithic temples are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offer a grounding start to your Gozo experience. The surrounding Xagħra countryside is peaceful and pristine — take a deep breath.
Next, head to Victoria (Rabat), Gozo’s buzzing little capital. Stroll through the old town’s winding streets, grab a coffee in Independence Square, and climb up to The Citadel for panoramic views over the whole island. You’ll see just how compact and green Gozo really is — hills rolling out to sea in every direction.
Lunch: Taste the Island
Time to refuel. For an authentic Gozo lunch, book a table at a local farm-to-table restaurant, or if you prefer a sea view, head to Xlendi or Marsalforn for fresh catch of the day. Gozo’s cuisine is rustic, local, and packed with flavour — think sheep’s cheese (ġbejniet), capers, olives, crusty ftira bread, and plenty of tomatoes kissed by the sun.
For something truly special, consider a pre-booked private picnic or tasting experience in the vineyards or countryside. We’ve got a few secret spots in The Gozo Edit – naturally.
Afternoon: Explore, Swim, or Sip
After lunch, you’ve got choices. Gozo may be small, but it’s full of gems:
- Ramla Bay: With its signature red-gold sand, this is Gozo’s most iconic beach. Great for swimming, sunbathing, or just wading with your trousers rolled up.
- Dwejra: A wild, dramatic coastline where the Azure Window once stood. It’s still breathtaking. Don’t miss the inland sea or a boat trip through the caves.
- Ta’ Pinu Basilica: A sacred site known for its miracles and serenity. Step inside for a moment of stillness.
Want something more off-the-beaten-track? Head inland for a short hike through the valley trails of Sanap Cliffs or explore tiny villages like Gharb or Qala for a slice of local life.
Before You Go: A Golden Hour Aperitif
As the sun begins to dip, grab a cold drink and soak it in. Try a rooftop bar in Nadur, a beach kiosk at Hondoq, or a wine bar tucked in Victoria’s old town. The light on Gozo at this time is pure magic.
Heading Back
Even if you’ve only spent the day here, you’ll likely leave with a full heart and a longing to return. The ferry back glides through calm seas under pink skies. It’s hard not to feel a little changed — in the best way.
And if you’re anything like us, next time, you’ll stay longer.
